Algae and algal metabolites greatly impact water treatment plants by clogging intake screens, increasing coagulant demand, shortening filter runs and increasing filter backwash requirements. They can also increase chlorine demand and disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation which causes unpleasant taste, odours and toxins. This also increases the microbial regrowth potential in distribution systems.
